Psychological Therapies

I offer a range of evidence based therapies to people struggling with anxiety disorders, depression, trauma and other types of psychological distress.

What therapies do you offer?

I offer psychological treatments for individuals and couples that are effective. I customise each course of treatment according to the needs of each client I see. I am qualified in a range of different psychological therapies and my treatment plans are informed by which therapy I feel will match your presenting difficulties.

I am trained in:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

  • Compassion Focused Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

I draw upon these different therapies in order to provide you with the most useful programme of treatment.

My sessions last 50 minutes and take place weekly. At the start of treatment I help you to establish your goals for therapy, and we review your progress towards these throughout the sessions.

My style is warm, approachable and down-to-earth and I strive to build a strong therapeutic relationship from the start. Research shows that the therapeutic relationship is the main predictor of  effective psychological therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach which has demonstrated effectiveness for a wide range of psychological conditions. Put simply, CBT helps patients to explore how their thoughts, and beliefs affect (and are affected by) their behaviours, bodily sensations and relationships. In my experience it is an approach that can really help patients get better quickly in terms of recovering from mental health conditions. It is an empowering approach and all through therapy you will be learning skills and techniques to help you manage thoughts and feelings which you can use after therapy has finished.

Useful for issues such as:

Panic, Health Anxiety, OCD, Social Anxiety, Body Image Problems, Low Self Esteem and Depression.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is a wonderful form of psychotherapy that helps people to overcome the symptoms of distress that are the result of traumatic life events. Multiple studies from across the world have demonstrated that EMDR is effective. The NICE Guidelines now recommend EMDR as a first line psychological treatment for people with a diagnosis of PTSD.  During EMDR therapy the client describes traumatic events in brief "doses" while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus.

Useful for issues such as:

PTSD, Traumatic Stress, and Childhood Trauma.

Compassion Focused Therapy

Compassion towards the self and others is now widely recognised as an emotional response which is a key  aspect of well-being. Without this "skill" it is very difficult for people to attain feelings of genuine wellbeing and calmness.  Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) promotes psychological and emotional healing by helping patients to become compassionate toward themselves and other people.

CFT aims to foster sympathy, sensitivity, and distress tolerance via the inclusion of specific  guided exercises.

Useful for issues such as:

Unhealthy Self-Criticism, Perfectionism, Lack of Compassion (towards self or others)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on the processes of thinking and feeling (rather than on the content of the thoughts as in CBT). It looks at how those processes guide our behaviour in helpful or less helpful ways. In ACT, you will learn how to respond to negative thoughts and distressing feelings in more adaptive ways. You will also learn how these newer ways of responding can help you to lead a more meaningful and values-driven life. ACT is particularly suited, in my view, to helping people live optimally and achieve greater wellbeing even when they have experienced losses.

Useful for issues such as:

Adjustment to change, Onset of illness, Adversity, Life transitions, Losses

Therapy with Dr Joel helped me discover some coping mechanisms, allowing me to deal with social anxiety and grief. I feel that my confidence and self-esteem has greatly increased since I began speaking with him. He has been kind, patient and intelligent throughout my sessions and I would highly recommend him. Thank you Dr Joel!
